Dukhuni Aunty — Annual Support

Also known as: Project Dukhuni

The Crisis: Surviving on $0.36 a Day

Dukhuni Aunty's story represents one of the most extreme cases of poverty We Do Charity has ever witnessed. Living in a small, isolated village in Bangladesh, Dukhuni was a mother trying to survive on a monthly income of approximately 1,200 BDT (less than $11 USD, or about $0.36 a day). To make matters worse, her son was critically ill, requiring constant care and medical expenses that she had absolutely no way of paying. The family was facing literal starvation, unable to afford even one solid meal a day.

The Power of Community and the First Viral Fundraiser

When our Moulvibazar coordinator, Rabbi Miah, discovered Dukhuni's situation, we knew that basic, short-term food aid would not be enough to break the cycle of despair. We decided to launch a dedicated fundraiser with a target of 24,000 BDT—calculated to cover a full year of basic food, medical support, and living expenses. This would give Dukhuni a stable foundation to care for her sick son without the daily threat of hunger.

Launched on October 12, 2024, the campaign resonated deeply with the Bangladeshi tech and SEO community. The story of a mother surviving on $0.36 a day spread rapidly across social networks, becoming We Do Charity's first ever viral fundraiser. Within just three days, the target of 24,000 BDT was fully met.

Strict Accountability & Immediate Closure

In line with our core value of absolute transparency and donor respect, the moment the target of 24,000 BDT was reached on October 15, We Do Charity immediately closed the fundraising pool. We announced that we would not accept any further donations for this case, ensuring that funds were not overallocated or hoarded. This established a critical precedent for all future WDC campaigns: we only raise what is strictly needed, and not a single Taka more.

The entire 24,000 BDT was distributed directly to Dukhuni to support her family for 12 months, allowing her to buy rice, lentils, vegetables, and basic medicine for her son. This intervention successfully prevented a severe humanitarian crisis in their household.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How was the target of 24,000 BDT calculated?
